The Super Blue Blood Moon is forecast for Wednesday 31 January.

According to US media, this will be happening for the first time in 150 years, making it a very rare event.

Senior Research fellow at South African National Space Agency (SANSA), Dr Peter Kotze explained what is a Super Blue Blood moon and its occurrences.

We have two full moons this month and the second one is called the blue moon because it happens very rarely.

So what is going to happen is that tonight we are going to see the moon slightly brighter and slightly bigger than normal.

It will rise in Cape Town around 19:57.

Kotze says as the moon rises tonight, simultaneously, a lunar eclipse will be taking place but this won’t be visible in Southern Africa. This is the reason why it is also called a blood moon.

The blood moon will only be visible to people living in Northern America, Northern Scandinavia and certain parts of Asia.
