Manhunt launched after policeman killed in Joburg
Johannesburg – A manhunt has been launched for four suspects after a 31-year-old police constable was shot and killed in Diepsloot, Johannesburg.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the constable and his colleague were robbed of their firearms and shot at before the suspects fled on foot after 20:00 on Tuesday.
The two police officers were changing a tyre when they were confronted by the suspects.
“The suspects fired shots and one policeman was shot in the upper body and died on his way to the hospital,” Dlamini said.
He said the other police officer was not hurt.
He said a team that included Crime Intelligence, officers from the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (The Hawks) and a provincial tracking team had been mobilised “to hunt these ruthless criminals”.
Police have appealed for information.
“They will work around the clock to bring them to book,” Dlamini said.
