4 arrested after large amounts of cash found buried in Tsakane and Springs
The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) has recovered an undisclosed amount of money buried at a house in a suburb in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.
EMPD spokesperson Chief Clifford Shongwe said a reliable source had led them to the house on Monday evening where they found a couple with “a lot of money in their possession” that made them suspicious.
“They then led us to a hole which they dug to hide a trunk full of undisclosed cash.”
There have been social media reports that the money recovered was R1.5m, however, Shonge could not confirm this.
“I don’t want to speculate on the amount. For now, we will say an undisclosed amount.”
Shonge said the 58-year-old man who lived in the house then lead them to a woman who lived in Springs.
The EMPD also discovered a large sum of money at her house.
He said the 40-year-old woman was allegedly the girlfriend of a SBV employee who was arrested in Germiston on May 7, on suspicion of stealing money.
However, SBV South Africa has said they do not employ the man.
“For now, we can’t link the man to the two houses because he is still in custody,” Shongwe added.
They arrested three women and one man, he added.
